John Mueller’s “A False Sense of Insecurity?”

Thought-provoking 2004 paper by Ohio State University’s John Mueller, A False Sense of Insecurity? (PDF file link), is all about some of the coldest, hardest facts of terrorism – compared and contrasted with it’s perception in our society, and the realities of what it means in the rest of the world. One or two debatable points (of view), but over-all this is a hard piece. It’s nice to see so many of the points and statements that I have heard in conversation, said myself or wondered in private – all laid out in one five-page paper with facts to back them up. Whether you find yourself nodding enthusiastically in agreement, or you find it does nothing but get under your skin – this is a great read. Linked as a downloadable PDF file only. There is discussion as well. (found on BoingBoing.net)
Hey, a nice and happy family you got there. Oh and the doggie too. Hi doggie doggie… Great post you got here. Will return… ^_*
I feel less un-safer already!
please write more about your ass
That’s quite a pleasant suggestion. Indeed, one can never go wrong with Ass editorial.
On a un-assly, boring & nerdy note, the current issue of Cabinet (my favorite boner-inducing quarterly) is rendered around the topic of ‘insecurity’….. Perhaps you should peruse if you haven’t already? …… You can read about the metaphysics of ruination; viscous bubbles, sponge grenades, and the future of non-lethal arms; phantom limbs and the imagined security of the body (since you seem to enjoy such anomolies). It’s a less pragamatic invocation of ‘insecurity’ than the source you reference …. but then again, it kind of rounds things out. (Skip the sluggish, slow-bleed-of-an-essay entitled ‘National Insecurity’….)
Check out back issues of Cabinet for assorted curiosities: invented languages, deception in warfare, chance & divination, therapeutic history of the vibrator (illustrating early devices marketed as pedal-operated ‘add-ons’ to conventional electric sewing machines) …..etc. Looking forward to their upcoming publication featuring 200 years of presidential doodles.
Hey, nice new site structure. Looks great. Cheers!
I wish you had sent this to the heads of US airlines a few days ago. What are the chances of being killed by a tube of toothpaste while on an airplane? Somehow I suspect rather slim.
