Missionary encounters extremely bizarre skin condition in Eastern Europe

A friend of mine has a relative who is a missionary in Eastern Europe. He recently shared photographs and the story of a man he is caring for, who has an extremely bizarre skin condition. The man has keratin-like matter growing out of the skin on hands and feet, which started when he was young, and very slowly continues to spread and grow. The areas begin as skin lesions, and the matter sprouts from those spots. The growths are very difficult to remove, and the man has so far just had to learn to live with it. There are a few medical precedents to this man’s case, but nothing is certain until more tests are done. In the meantime, the missionary is helping to make life easier for the man. Scroll down for more photos. He writes:
“I found this man, and other than his hands and feet, he looked and seemed in good health. As best as I could gather these growths began when he was 14 years old, and began in the area of his wrists. The skin on his wrists and the back of his hands resembles that of a hedgehog – hundreds of spike like growths. The problem is much more severe on his palms and fingers where the growths resemble very much that of nails infected with a fungus. The growths have that same texture, smell and feel. I cut a number of the largest growths off, most of witch did not bleed. Some of the smaller growths did bleed a small amount and he seemed much more sensitive to the cutting of the smaller growths. I soaked his hands first in 3 WEA (phenyl mercuric nitrate) and then began. The 3 WEA did help to soften the growths but they still took time to cut through, or sand down, but it worked just as it does with these types of nails on normal hands or feet. I was able to pull many of the smaller growths off applying steady pressure and slowly pulling. But after 1.5 hrs there was not a noticeable change as there are hundreds and hundreds of growths. There was also quite a bit of dissolved material in the bucket of 3 WEA after we finished.
On his feet I did not cut anything, but tried two different solutions of salicylic acid, one a bit weaker than the other, and also a freeze spray wart remover.
I met his mother and brother (they all live together) and their skin looked very normal. They all eat the same foods and he and his brother sleep in the same bed.
It has grown slowly but steadily but has not spread to other parts of his body, just a bit below his knees on his legs. He has other skin growth (many would be skin tags) on his face, and some moles on his chest. The growths are not as bad on his feet but I was told that more than 10 years ago many we cauterized off his feet, and they did not return. I think with repeated soaking and cutting most could be removed but other parts will I think need to be burned away in some form.”
I emailed the missionary a few more questions:
Is there a medical term for this man’s condition?
Doctors here have called it Lewandowsky-Lutz, though I have not been able to find any pictures of this condition to compare.
Has any analysis of the matter growing off of his skin been done?
There was 18 years ago, when they came up with the name of what they thought it was. He has not been treated since then.
When do you understand that this started with him?
He is now 38 and it started when he was 14, on one wrist. He never returned for treatments as he felt the first cauterizing was effective in that the growths did not return to that area, but felt they grew more quickly in other areas.
Does the man have any other unusual symptoms?
He appears healthy other than the growths. He has 15 skin tags on his face, and a wart in one ear.
Have there been any theories about this man’s past, something he might have done, ingested, or places he’s been to… that may have caused it?
As he says he did not do or eat anything his brother did not do or eat, and his brother appears to be perfectly normal, not yet. I am currently showing the pictures to veterinarians, as I am also considering that maybe this is something he got from an animal (pig, sheep, cow).
Does it look like the man’s condition is treatable or curable?
Curable, I don’t know. But with ongoing thorough cleaning, creams, soaking and cutting – it will be much better for him.

Maybe you should call your site “Mr. X”
Speechless.
You say Eastern Europe, this would be anywhere around, say.. Belarus or the Ukraine? By a little place known as Chernobyl?
Sweetie are you aware of the flurry and riot of traffic and comments you have caused over at the WFMU blog, with your simultaneous post of this hmmmm?

Horrible and fascinating. What can one say? I hope this man is able to get the help he needs!
How did you come across this person?
I have seen Shope papillomavirus in rabbits and goats. It looks exactly the same as the growths on this fellow. As the growths are the result of a viral infection only an ant-viral will work as treatment – antibiotics will have little to no effect. Has he ever been treated with an anti-viral (ie… Cidofovir)?
More than likely, my guess is this is genetic and is a mutation of his skin cells causing the growth of nails, basically, they are possibly a form of tumor, since it’s an uncontrollable growth of cells which are not specific to the body. He probably needs x-rays to identify the layering of how thick and weather he still has blood vessels under all that growth. If so, it can possibly be fixed, he might have to have the skin on his hand removed and replaced with skin graphs, possibly the first of many times intentional burning will have to occur to destroy the afflicted cells.
Looks a bit like the results of “Shopes Papillomavirus” in these rabbits.

the invisible man:
You should definitely try to procure a biopt sample; I may be assuming things here, but it may not be that hard to get considering that the pictures made it onto the net in the way that they did. It might be worth your time to dig in.
Please, do let us know if you choose to pursue this particular case because I, for one, have not been able to get this out of my mind since I first saw the images. If something can be done for this person as a result of this forum’s posting, it would be a good thing.
I remember seeing a man with a similar condition in the early 1980s at the University of Pittsburgh. Ten years or so later I remember seeing him again and noticing that his hands were normal. Since I didn’t know the guy I didn’t ask him about it, but one of the University hospitals in that area might be a lead for you.
His hands turn me on
Horses sometimes get very similar growths in their ears. They are thought to be caused by a virus and aggravated by irritations caused by flies and gnats. Veterinarians remove them (after sedating the horse) by scraping, but they come back immediately. Cauterization seems to last longer but is not totally effective. I wish I could give you more information, but I’ve only seen the removal process and I am not a vet. Perhaps one could help you out. I wish you the best.
I will never eat pop corn chicken again………
Nothing than a good korean manicure can’t take care of
I just want to know how he put on that sweater
I am shocked by some of the comments being left here! This poor man is probably shut off from any life outside his home, and his indoors is very limited no doubt – by no fault of his own. Here’s hoping that this man gets the help he needs.
Gnarly.
Well yeahh but lmao at popcorn chicken 🙂
One kind of has to wonder how it is to be this person. I mean, do the growths on his hands still feel, like do the nerves still feel, or what?
Also, is it just me, or do his hands and feet have a very “Ben ‘The Thing’ Grimm” look to them? I’m not making fun, but I’m intrigued.
FAKE. You mean to tell me medical experts are still perplexed for 24+ years on what this thing is?
Well now, nothing works better like the good ole over the counter remedies like freeze wart removers and acne cream eh? Have you tried preparation H? I hear that can relieve some swelling. Oh, and ya gotta love the noobies in this thread thinking they know what theyre talking about. Jesus Christ, get this man to closest ER , and leave him in the care of real health professionals! (and I’m not talking about a veterinary ER either)
Can we find out what’s wrong with this guy’s skin?
I mean, I’d hate for my pretties to be in a similar boat.
My palms itch just looking at it
*looks at again*
Another endless string of comments:

I love this by someone named Jaokim on above link:
“I wanted to say fake, but I’m uncertain. Some of the photos, especially the one of his whole torso, where you can see everything except the head, look very fake, like someone plastered stuff on his skin, and then made some dots and stuff a bit further up the arms to soften the transition. The first large image, of the hand, I suppose, also looked fake to me.
However, some of the others look more real, like the one of the foot especially.
If it’s a hoax, it’s fairly well accomplished, by someone who knows what they’re doing with SFX makeup, and I can’t really see why anyone would go to such lengths for something to post on a blog.
Most hoax photos of a shocking and bizarre nature that turn up on the internet are from movies or similar, though, so that might be a possibility. I’m hoping it is.”
@Ag: Those rabbits kinda look like little bunny cthulhus.
i think someone is plagiarizing your writing, i’ve seen this pop up everywhere. you should definitely sue these people, i think you got a case. some of them took not just the photos but your whole text too.
THIS IS A VIRAL MARKETING CAMPAIGN, DISREGARD, DO NOT LINK TO IT!
The only “viral” campaign Mark Allen is involved in is the infestation of bats in his and Jim’s mountain home. They have bats in their belfry.
This is a HOAX!
The pictures are so fake it is funny. I got a good laugh out of this.
MARK ALLEN IS DOING THIS TO RESEARCH VIRAL MARKETING FOR A STORY HE IS DOING FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES! I CALLED THE EDITOR! DO NOT LINK TO IT! DO NOT LINK TO IT!
You’ve heard of Edward Scissor Hands? Meet Lenny Loofah hands.

“You’re soaking in it!”
“Dishwashing liquid?”
“Don’t worry…it’s Palmolive.”
not to belittle this tragedy this poor man may or may not be dealing with, but the photos remind me of scenes in the film Matango: Attack of the Mushroom People (1963). i remember seeing it on TV as a kid and i just recently bought it on dvd.
pleasure cruisers are shipwrecked and stranded on an island, some of the only food they can find is mushrooms… and of course by digesting the mushrooms, they begin to transform into the mushroom people.
Please can Mark Allen advise what the situation is with this gentleman now?
I want to know if all the growths have now been cut off and if his condition has improved at all…
Actually, I am getting more and more doubts about this being real. I can’t imagine that there is no reaction so far to all the offers that are made here. And why is the country such a big secret?
The guy on the picture doesn’t look like 38, and I just can’t believe that nothing has been done to help this guy in all those years.
What does someone look like who is 38? Best way to tell someone’s age is from their hands or face, and in this case you can’t see either 🙂
I also find it hard to believe it’s been left this long, but look at the woman with the world’s largest tumour, and the world’s fatest man, etc. I guess some people let it get on top of them over a long period of time without realising.
I don’t know about this case, but have any of you been to eastern europe or any former soviet country? People can sit in their isolated towns for years without anyone doing anything about it. It’s not the US with an ER on every corner. I once visited a city where the population was over 3k and the nearest hospital was 3 hours away over NON paved roads. It could happen.
As for this guy, I thought it was dough at first. eek
any updates?????????????????
This guy should cut off his right hand also. There can’t be any way off curing that thing.
id cut off both hands. im pretty sure he cant move his fingers…ive also seen a semi-similar condition. i believe its called moss’ disease or something like that. it made ur skin bloat up and then crack like “The Thing” from Fantastic 4. The disease also made your body mass much bigger. it really looked like the thing except with a pink texture instead of orange…its early in the morning. t=h-iii-zz

you lot are sad fucking twats probably get bullied at school and can only sit at home writing on blogs
al of you get lifesbefore its too late
Sucks for you, dude. That’s what you get when you go around fucking farm animals. Good luck trying to jack off to porn, the only thing close enough to a woman you’ll get! 🙂
I say we call him Hedgehog Man. I hope that we will get updates on his condition, which may be the same as Tree Man’s. If Tree Man is helped by the synthetic Vitamin E, maybe the same will work for Hedgehog Man.
I had a condition that suddenly appeared when I was fourteen. I had many of what appeared to be warts on my hands. For about three months, my doctor tried to treat them as normal warts, but they continued to spread and became a horror. I had about 50 warts on my hands after about 3 months. He was about to try to burn them off when he suggested that I try an over the counter antifungal cream called Desenex, as a last resort. While no wart removers worked at all, the Desenex worked. Within a week most of the warts were gone and within two weeks they had all disappeared. I have never had a problem with warts since. I think this could be the same problem. If I hadn’t used the Desenex, I would have been overrun with warts and who knows where they would have spread. I would hate to see these people suffering for nothing. Try Desenex, or another over the counter antifungal cream. I think this may be a strange rare fungus.
Thanks
